Ship Motion Monitoring and advisory system

OCTOPUS-Onboard is a state-of-the-art modular ship motion monitoring and decision support system for ships and other floating structures. World-leading shipping companies have used OCTOPUS-Onboard since 2003 for route planning and optimization of speed, heading and fuel consumption in every weather condition.

OCTOPUS-Onboard combines wave measurements, weather forecasts, and navigation data like speed, course, RPM and the voyage plan, with ship characteristics, loading conditions, and motion sensor measurements. This facilitates continuous monitoring as well as simulation and forecasting of the ship responses and performance. Warnings can be instigated for possible hazards and their consequences. As a result, OCTOPUS-Onboard makes the main tasks of the officer on watch easier, by giving support for safe and economic navigation, damage avoidance and route planning.

OCTOPUS-Performance
OCTOPUS-Performance is the best alternative possible when it comes to reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Performance extension within OCTOPUS-Onboard makes it possible to monitor the effect on the fuel consumption of a change of speed, heading or trim.

Dynamic Postioning capability forecast function
OCTOPUS-Onboard is extended with the Dynamic Positioning capability forecast function, DP for short. DP software gives offshore vessels the possibility to make use of a safe time window for their weather-sensitive operations. This DP capability forecast is based on:

Thruster locations and maximum forces 
Wave radar
Underwater hull form
Superstructure
Wave, wind and current forecast
Wamit 3D-diffraction wave drift force database
Actual loading condition

With DP capability the crew can easily see if it is sensible and efficient to maintain the operation or that is better to abort it and start again at a different time. The benefits are clear: optimal use of man and machine in a safe environment, leading to significant cost reductions.

OCTOPUS-TMS (Transport Monitoring System)
OCTOPUS-TMS provides cost efficient flexible solutions for accurate measurement of motions and accelerations on specific points on the vessel.

One-sensor OCTOPUS-TMS measures the roll and pitch angle and period. This setup is widely used to identify the risk of parametric roll in an early stage.

The second option is the 3-sensor OCTOPUS-TMS that provides virtual measurement of motions, velocities and accelerations in any thinkable location on the vessel, such as CoG of the cargo or a high point in a crane boom tip. In addition to this, additional sensors can be placed on the cargo to measure the cargo motions.
