OCTOPUS-RESONANCE (INTEGRATED)

OCTOPUS-RESONANCE can also be installed in a ship's onboard network. Most of the today's modern navigation bridges allow this configuration. Serial and digital network interfaces and an advanced data integrity control-system are used to guarantee that the OCTOPUS-RESONANCE display always shows valid data. Advantages of the integrated configuration compared with the stand-alone configuration are:

  • The integrated solution automatically uses the most recent stability data obtained from the loading computer.
  • The integrated solution can link up with a weather forecast provider or wave sensor to monitor the wave conditions.
  • Resonance diagrams are always displayed for the actual speed and heading.
  • The system informs the officer on watch when source data (stability, navigation or wave data) gets outdated or out-of-range or when the ship is (close to) operating in a resonance zone.
  • OCTOPUS-RESONANCE warnings and alarms can be monitored and acknowledged using the ship's central alarm system (NMEA protocols).
  • During normal operation, OCTOPUS-RESONANCE (INTEGRATED) does not need the attention of the officer on watch. However, when the ship enters a resonance condition, the OCTOPUS-RESONANCE alarm system warns the officer, after which his reaction is required.
Intermediate integrated configurations are available, such as the automatic update of weather forecasts in combination with a manual update of the loading condition or vice versa.

Resonance diagram based on a manually entered visual observation. The diagram can be updated automatically using an interface with the weather forecast system and loading computer. Since the ship is operating in a resonance zone, a response alarm has been generated.
