OCTOPUS-RESONANCE (STAND-ALONE)

OCTOPUS-RESONANCE indicates combinations of speed and heading at which large motions can be expected due to wave excitation. The resonance diagrams are constructed according to the German SBG-guidelines for stability. The following resonance zones are displayed:

  • synchronic roll
  • parametric roll
  • surf-riding or broaching
  • high wave groups
The resonance zones are calculated and displayed in a polar diagram for sea, swell, and the wave interference system. Guidance is given on the advisable change of speed and heading to avoid these potentially hazardous situations.

OCTOPUS-RESONANCE can be used as a stand-alone application, for example on a PC on the Chart Table. The stand-alone configuration only requires a minimum of manual input: some stability data, wave parameters, and the ship's speed and heading.

Advantages of the OCTOPUS-RESONANCE software as compared with printed pre-calculated documentation are:

  • OCTOPUS-RESONANCE correctly positions the resonance zones due to sea, swell, and the wave interference system relative to the ship, giving the clearest situation overview.
  • OCTOPUS-RESONANCE displays the resonance zones exactly for the roll period as specified by the officer on watch. Pre-printed documentation requires look-up of the graphs that correspond best.
  • OCTOPUS-RESONANCE gives clear warning or alarm messages when the ship is in a potential dangerous situation. The alarms and actions can be logged.
OCTOPUS-RESONANCE (STAND-ALONE) is the simplest available OCTOPUS configuration. OCTOPUS-RESONANCE is upgradeable to an integrated system with automatic updates of all the source data and a coupling with the ship's central alarm system.
