Ship-response based route optimization

The dynamics and performance of your ship in a certain seastate depend on the ship size, the loading condition, the speed and course. Different ships behave differently in the same waves. Therefor, 'bad weather' is not always bad ship performance. But on the other hand: 'good weather' is not always good performance. Complex situations like combined sea and swell may be difficult to judge for the officer.

Using OCTOPUS-Routing in combination with Meteo Consult's SPOS, route alternatives are computed based on the combined use of weather forecasts and the ship dynamics in the expected waves. The route calculation can be tuned by specification of criteria like fuel consumption, ship motions, hull loads, slamming or motion sickness indices.

OCTOPUS Routing can be delivered as part of Imtech's Unimacs bridge concept.

Advantages

Advantages of the response-based route calculation over standard weather routing are:
  • More accurate ETA-calculation
  • Improved accuracy in fuel consumption prediction
  • Increased awareness of critical situations
  • Warnings are given at exceed of allowable response levels
  • A class-approved ship-specific model is used to calculate the ship dynamics

OCTOPUS is integrated in Meteo Consult's weather routing package SPOS
